It is a game without spectacle but all the more memorable because of it. But for all the talk, none of those games ever really are able to do that and here, Where The Heart Leads does it naturally and effortlessly. So many games boast about how you will feel “connected to your companions”, “develop meaningful relationships”, etc, etc. Armature have been able to accurately translate the process of learning details about people, growing to like someone, or just becoming a friend with someone like Where The Heart Leads does. You learn their personalities, their interests, their hobbies, their crushes, and even their enemies. That work is also bolstered by the gameplay which has you wondering around these various moments of Whit’s life, interacting with everyone who was around at the time and just talking with them. Gameplay And Narrative Harmoniously Intertwined There are dozens and dozens of scenes in the game that do this but in my ten hours with the game, I formed genuine connections with every single member of Whit’s family and friendship circle and was fully invested in their futures. You feel every piece of work Armature has done to translate that feeling in reality into Where The Heart Leads, whether it is through the excellent writing that effectively conveys everyone’s personalities or the emotional and fitting soundtrack that accompanies each scene perfectly. Sege might create more problems than he solves, but at the end of the day he is your brother. On this journey you dip in and out of Whit’s life, seeing him and his family at various points, from young adolescents enjoying their first taste of love to empty nest parents thriving off the free time (and lack of dependents), creating a sustainable life for them well into their retirement years.Īrmature’s way of having you hop into Whit and Rene’s life, his brother Sege’s career opportunities and unique perspective, and catching up with everyone in the town to see where they have been since you last saw them is a stroke of genius, as you build up your connection with them and slowly learn to love every person in their own way one scene after another. Hopefully in the future we might get to see it debut on the Nintendo Switch, or even on Xbox, so that we can use the portability of the Cloud to enjoy Where the Heart Leads in a more free manner. On his way back to the surface, he goes on an ethereal journey back through his past, the moments that shaped him, and into his future, the moments that have yet to happen. If not, this won't be the game for you, despite the fact that the narrative is thoroughly engaging and the level design being pretty damn gorgeous. So, all there really is to know about Where the Heart Leads is that if you are looking for an incredibly relaxed game that asks very little of you as a player, then you'll feel right at home. But, it's a PS4 exclusive game, meaning you have to sit down in front of a monitor/TV, controller in-hand to experience Where the Heart Leads, and personally, it often became a challenge to warrant playing this over some of the more exciting titles of the present. I thoroughly enjoyed Where the Heart Leads, and it proved to be gripping all throughout, but, it's the sort of title that would fit perfectly on the Nintendo Switch, as a game to pick up and enjoy over 30-60 minute intervals on public transport - as it doesn't require constant attention to enjoy it. The point is, if you are not a fan of reading or don't get on with slower-paced games, then Where the Heart Leads probably won't be the one for you. The intervals between new narratives are small and might include you wandering to the other side of the farm, or the local town, perhaps even completing an activity that asks you to hold an input to help construct something. You, as Whit, will have to complete a variety of minor tasks and explore small, but diverse levels to find the next stage of conversation, however, this isn't to the degree of a platformer. Upon deciding to save the dog, Whit falls deep into the pit, and the storyline follows Whit as he climbs out of this hole, travelling through memories from his past on the way.Īs Where the Heart Leads is a narrative adventure through and through, the storyline is told through text and conversation. The game starts with a vicious storm that opens a massive hole on the family farm, a hole that the family dog falls into, leaving Whit with a decision to either put his life on the line to save the faithful pooch, or to instead leave the canine to an untimely fate. The story follows Whit, and is set at key intervals during his lifetime, but it doesn't just jump right into that.
